Proposed Studio Renovation

Project Narrative

830AM KSDP / Aleutian Peninsula Broadcasting incorporated in December 1987.  The organization owns and operates radio station KSDP licensed to Sand Point.  The station's signal is heard by roughly two thousand people living in Sand Point, King Cove, Cold Bay, Nelson Lagoon and Perryville.  The station broadcasts in King Cove on an FM repeater.  The station emphasizes state and local programming, as well as, marine weather.  The format is a mixture of music, news and talk

The studio renovation project for which funding is being requested would add a satellite dish outside the station's studios, improve the production and on-air studios and enhance the functionality of the general office space.

The addition of a satellite dish would enable the radio station to receive and broadcast in real time Alaska Public Radio Network programming.  At present, the station must first download APRN programs from a website and then import them into the computer for broadcast.  The restriction means KSDP cannot air APRN programming unavailable for download and requires that any APRN program be time-delayed.  The purchase and installation of a satellite dish would eliminate the problem.

The studio renovation project would soundproof all four walls in the production and on-air studios.  Soundproofing would improve the overall sound quality of our local broadcasts.  Specifically, this would mean a better listening experience for listeners to our local, daily news and talk programs.

The studio renovation project where the general office space is concerned would modify and eliminate several problematic features.  The current general manager's office would become the news director's office after having the internal wall separating that office from the outer office replaced by a glass window and a ventilation system installed.  The current general manager's office overheats and the ventilation system would circulate warm air from the current general manager's office with the cooler air in the on-air studio.  The on-air studio is most often bone cold.  A new office for the general manager would be formed by glassing in a back portion of the current radio station office.

The alterations to the general office area would improve traffic flow and the quality of that work space.  At present, the news director’s desk is positioned up against the internal wall separating the current general manager's office from the outer office area, which hampers the flow of traffic.  Additionally, these modifications to the office space will eliminate dark windowless work spaces such as the general manager's current office.

The studio renovation project would also address problems with the front door to the station, which needs to be replaced.  After being repaired multiple times, the door remains so difficult to push open that frequently it is mistaken for being locked.  During, the renovation, this door would be taken out and replaced with the door to the current GM's office.  The doors are identical.

The execution of the studio renovation project would be overseen by KSDP General Manager Kells Hetherington who reports on a monthly basis to the station's democratically elected five member Board of Directors.
